Paper trading crypto with leverage: how to practise safely

By Overfit Labs · Updated · Educational only, not financial advice.

Paper trading means placing simulated trades with virtual money against live prices. It's a good way to learn an order ticket, test a routine and feel how fast leveraged positions move, all without risking money. It's also easy to learn the wrong lessons from it, so it helps to know what a simulator can't show you.

How leverage changes the maths

Leverage lets a small amount of margin control a larger position. At 10x, $100 of margin controls a $1,000 position, and a 1% price move changes your equity by about 10% of that margin. Gains and losses are both multiplied. Fees are charged on the full position size, not on your margin, so they grow with leverage too.

Liquidation, roughly

On an isolated-margin position, the exchange closes you out when your losses use up the margin down to a small maintenance amount. Ignoring fees, a long is liquidated after a drop of about 1 / leverage minus the maintenance margin rate: around 20% at 5x, 10% at 10x, under 5% at 20x. See liquidation. Crypto routinely moves 5% in a day, which is why high leverage leaves very little room.

A safer practice routine

  1. Start at 1–2x. Learn order types (market, limit, stop) before adding leverage.
  2. Decide risk first, size second. Pick how much of the account you'd lose if the stop is hit (many traders use 0.5–1%), then work out size from the distance to the stop.
  3. Always set a stop-loss inside the liquidation price. A stop beyond liquidation never fires.
  4. Keep a realistic account size. Practising with $100,000 of virtual money when you'd really trade $1,000 trains the wrong habits.
  5. Journal paper trades separately from real ones, and review them the same way.
  6. Set a graduation rule, e.g. 50+ trades with positive expectancy and no rule breaks in the last 20, before risking real money, and then start small.

Where simulators differ from reality

In Daily Edge

Daily Edge Paper is a simulator with virtual money only, using live public prices and simplified models for fills, fees, funding and liquidation. The free plan caps leverage at 5x, Pro allows up to 20x. Closed paper trades are logged in your journal tagged PAPER and never mix with real stats. Nothing here is financial advice.
